In separate interviews after a joint caucus meeting yesterday, Parliamentary Welfare Committee chairperson and secretary, Cdes Paddy Zhanda and Kudakwashe Bhasikiti, said the caucus had been fruitful.
“We were consulting and sharing ideas on various issues, which include encouraging each other to engage constructively on national issues,” Cde Zhanda said.
“We were saying let’s debate with one voice on things that affect our country economically. It is only constructive debates that will see our economy improving,” he said.
Cde Zhanda, who is Zanu-PF legislator for Goromonzi North constituency, said they agreed that their welfare could only be improved if the national economy improved.
“We said while we discuss about our own welfare, it cannot be detached from the national welfare. We cannot expect our welfare to improve when the general populace is in poverty. We then decided that as MPs we have to debate motions for the benefit of the economy,” he said.
Cde Bhasikiti who is Mwenezi East MP (Zanu-PF) said: “We agreed that there is need for us to speak with one voice on motions, which make our economy move forward. We want to have a common position on issues, which will make us responsible MPs because we represent people who want to see the economy working. Everyone wants to see the economy recover so we said let’s look at what is critical for our economy and the proposals we can make to improve the economy.”
The joint caucus came against the background of MPs debating along party lines on motions like the one on sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe by the European Union, United Kingdom and the United States of America.
The motion was moved in the Senate by Cde Minah Mandaba.
