AS the country gears up for the Mr and Miss Albinism Zimbabwe 2026 grand finale, model Thabo Sibanda is emerging as one of the young voices championing awareness, inclusion and self-confidence for people living with albinism.
The pageant, organised by the Albinism Dare to Dream Initiative (ADDI), will culminate in the grand finale on July 4 at the Marina Convention Centre in Harare.
It will run under the theme, “Proudly In My Skin”.
More than a beauty and modelling competition, the event seeks to promote self-love, challenge stereotypes and advance social inclusion for persons living with albinism.
Other contestants participating at the pageant are Sthembile Kafesu, Anesu Mupfumbati, Nomatter Kamuzhanje, Christine Edward, Godknows Luweya, Percy Bomba, Victoria Beyonce Maorera, Shakespear Tinashe Muronzi and Nathaniel Madondo.
For Sibanda, a Science Education student at Hillside Teachers’ College, the competition presents an opportunity to advocate for a cause close to his heart.
Raised in Cowdray Park, Sibanda attended St Columbus High School before pursuing his Advanced Level studies at Sizane High School.
He describes himself as a confident, resilient and ambitious young Zimbabwean determined to make a positive impact in society.
“My upbringing taught me the values of hard work, perseverance and self-belief.
“As a person living with albinism, I’ve learnt to embrace my uniqueness and overcome challenges,” said Sibanda.
Beyond his studies, the aspiring model is actively involved in community initiatives that promote awareness, inclusion and empowerment.
He believes education, leadership and advocacy are critical in building a society where diversity is celebrated rather than misunderstood.
His decision to enter the Mr Albinism Zimbabwe pageant was inspired by a desire to challenge misconceptions surrounding albinism while proudly representing Bulawayo on a national stage.
“Modelling gives me a platform to showcase confidence, celebrate diversity and inspire others.
“By embarking on this journey, I want to challenge stereotypes and demonstrate that people living with albinism can achieve their goals and make meaningful contributions to society,” he said.
Should he be crowned Mr Albinism Zimbabwe 2026, Sibanda says he intends to use the title to advance awareness campaigns and advocate for equal opportunities for people living with albinism.
He hopes to work with organisations, community groups and government programmes to address issues affecting the albinism community, including access to skin-care products, eye-health support and educational opportunities.
“Many people still have misconceptions about albinism. Awareness programmes can help create a more inclusive society where everyone is valued and supported.
“As someone living with albinism, I understand some of the challenges people face.
“I want young people to know that with confidence, determination and support, they can pursue their goals and make meaningful contributions to their communities and to Zimbabwe.”
Sibanda’s message extends beyond those living with albinism to all young people.
“I encourage every young person never to allow their condition or circumstances to define their future.
“Your dreams are valid and your potential is not limited.
“Believe in yourself, work hard and remain focused on your goals.
“Be proud of your uniqueness and never stop striving towards your dreams,” he said.
