Zambia and Zimbabwe.
He was also a member of the KPMG Africa Limited board of directors and the KPMG Africa executive committee. His responsibilities included overseeing KPMG’s operations in sub-Saharan Africa.
With over 27 years external audit and advisory experience covering a wide range of sectors, with specific industry specialisation in banking and finance, his expertise will be sorely missed.
Mr Matavire joined KPMG in January 1983 and proved to be a very
valuable asset as he rose through the ranks to the esteemed position of partner.
He mainly worked on financial services clients, resulting in him championing the setting up of KPMG Zimbabwe’s banking and finance audit department, a unit which has significantly grown and saw KPMG becoming renowned in the auditing of financial institutions.
A well respected member of the accounting profession, Mr T was a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Zimbabwe
council. He also sat on the ICAZ Examination Board and had been on the ICAZ Mining Affairs Board for several years.
Terry’s notable journey began at Hartzell High School in the Manicaland Province where he did his A-Level studies.
It did not take long for his “intelligence streak” to manifest as he scooped 15 points at A-Level, a phenomenon that was quite rare during that time.
Impressed by his results, Cambridge University extended a scholarship to Terry for him to continue his education.
Unfortunately for Terry, communication with him was not possible as he had gone back to his rural areas and in the absence of modern technology, this opportunity lapsed before he could seize it.
What could have been an unfortunate incident of Terry missing out on the scholarship certainly turned into a fortunate event for KPMG where he did his articles of clerkship
after attaining a Bachelor of Accountancy degree at the University of Zimbabwe.
His workmates described him as a people’s person who had time for everybody.
“He was respectful, humble, loving and, above all, willing to assist wherever he could and will be sorely missed,” they said.
Terry is survived by his wife Elizabeth and two children, Tatenda and Anesu. — Business Reporter.
