PROVINCIAL finals for the Mr and Miss Zimbabwe bodybuilding contest are scheduled to take place next weekend in Bulawayo with the top three winners set to represent Matabeleland at the national finals on 18 October in Harare.
Matabeleland Association of Bodybuilding and Fitness organising secretary Simon Gama confirmed that the province would hold its semi-finals on Saturday at the newly opened Body Works Gym.
Gama said the National Association of Bodybuilding and Fitness of Zimbabwe had changed the format for entry into the national premium bodybuilding contest to ensure a quality event.
“Previously bodybuilders could simply confirm their participation through registration but it led to a lot of entrants, some of whom it was felt should not have been competing at that stage. The association then decided it would be prudent if we hold semi-finals in various provinces with the winners proceeding to the national finals. There will be four categories that contestants would be taking part in and these include seniors, juniors, ladies and Ms Bikini,” said
Gama, adding that they were expecting a full house at the show and would be looking forward to having top bodybuilders from the region that include Mike Alimu, who has been consistently participating in national contests.
Confidence Mpala and Delvin Page are expected to battle it out in the juniors section.
Lightweight and middleweight bodybuilders, Lovemore Munyamana and John Domingo Lunga are also expected to feature at the event.
The local bodybuilders will have to battle it out with several athletes among them the defending champion, Champion Mbewe, who walked away with the crown last year.
Gama revealed they had a new executive in office with John Mhangwa leading the committee as chairman, Thompson Mpala vice-chairman and the secretary is Zweli Dube and Alimu a committee member.
NABFZ spokesperson Quiet Shangai confirmed Mr Zimbabwe will be held at the Harare International School on 18 October adding senior men will battle it out in the under 70kg, under 80kg, under 90kg and over 90kg categories with an exhibition show for disabled bodybuilders.
“We are glad to have secured a number of sponsors who are partnering us this year and among them are National Foods, Crystal Candy, Kutaura, Nutritech, P Shar, Karibadrill, Wang Yakubu, Brian Mussa Evox and Timothy Nkomo.
“I think we are going to see tight competition this year. Several top bodybuilders that we can expect to see include Ms Zimbabwe Figure 2013, Hellen Costa, Mr Zimbabwe 2013, Mbewe, Mr Zimbabwe middleweight 2013, Ndumiso Dhlodhlo, Mr Zimbabwe lightweight 2013, Isaac Chimuchenga , Mr Ironman 2013, Vincent Kandiyero, Eddie Marondere, Noah Dzvokora, Mr Zim Junior 2013, Reginald Pasara,” said Shangai.
