THE late Mrs Rebecca Mabhena, the widow of the late National Hero Welshman Mabhena who died on Sunday at the age of 93, had unwavering dedication and commitment to the country’s liberation struggle, Bulawayo Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Cde Judith Ncube said yesterday.
Addressing mourners that attended her funeral service at the United Congregational Church of Southern Africa (UCCSA) in Njube suburb, Cde Ncube said the late Cde Mabhena was one of the heroines that contributed immensely to the liberation struggle.
Mrs Mabhena was later buried at Lady Stanley Cemetery beside her late husband.
Minister Ncube said Cde Mabhena was a remarkable woman known for her resolute work ethic and unwavering courage.
“Mrs Mabhena supported her husband both emotionally and materially throughout their arduous journey to free their land from the clutches of colonial rule. Fondly referred to as “Ugogo uMaDlodlo,” she was not only a pillar of strength within her family but also an essential support system for freedom fighters, providing nursing care,” said Cde Ncube.

She said Mrs Mabhena dedicated her life to serving her community and country at large as she was one of the nurses that attended to freedom fighters during the liberation struggle.
“Ugogo uMaDlodlo has been described as a very hard-working woman who worked tirelessly in taking care of her family when her husband, our National hero, Cde Welshman Mabhena was involved in the armed struggle,” said Minister Ncube.
She said Government assisted in the burial of Mrs Mabhena in recognition of her contribution to the liberations struggle.
Minister Ncube reminded those in attendance that the sacrifices made by Mrs Mabhena’s late husband and fellow comrades paved the way for the nation’s cherished freedom.
“As a province, we are equally honoured to have one of our own receiving such a State-assisted burial. We are grateful to the Government of Zimbabwe under the leadership of President ED Mnangagwa for this gesture,” said Minister Ncube.
“Our National Hero Welshman Mabhena and our mother Mrs Mabhena fought a good fight and they have finished their race. Sokusalele thina, therefore there is a need for all of us to play our part in rebuilding the economy towards the attainment of Vision 2030.”

Mrs Mabhena’s legacy encompassed a rich catalogue of roles: a dedicated teacher, a trained nurse and an unwavering supporter of her community and nation. Her impact extended beyond her immediate family as Gogo Mabhena was known for her boundless generosity and her unyielding commitment to unity.
Her children, grandchildren and relatives highlighted how Mrs Mabhena’s works touched many lives.
“Father spent a lot of time in detention so Mrs Mabhena took care of the kids who are now adults and professionals in different fields,” said Mr Tymon Mabhena.
Mrs Thokozile Siwela, one of Gogo Mabhena’s daughters said her mother was a brave woman who was equal to the challenges.
“We learnt from her that if there are challenges, you pray about them and deal with them,” said Mrs Siwela.–@SikhulekelaniM1
