MUTARE’S rugby franchise, Mutare Sports Club, will be eyeing a home victory tomorrow (Saturday) when they take on Old Johanians.
The match will kick-off at 3pm at Mutare Sports Club.
Last Saturday in the season opener against the Harare giants, Old Georgians, the Mutare side were walloped 57 -0. The defending champions Harare Sports Club trampled over Police Defenders 51-11, while Old Hararians secured a 40-17 against Old Johanians.
MSC coach, Mackenzie Munetsi on Wednesday, said they had been polishing mistakes from the previous match and would be looking forward to a sweet victory against OJS.
“For our away matches, we usually travel with a depleted side, given that most of the senior players will be having work commitments. However, at home we will have our full squad and we should be able to garner maximum points,” said Munetsi.
Meanwhile, last Friday the 2016 main sponsor of MSC Shumbas, frozen and dried foods distribution company, Mega Market, unveiled the team’s new blue kit.
Mega Market advertising and marketing manager, Joe Damalanga, said apart from its $1 000 endorsement, the company would remain committed to assist the team in any way possible to meet its 2016 fixture requirements.
Another sponsor, Spar Mutare, pledged to provide meals for all away matches and to donate five rugby balls.
MSC chairman, Edwin Mapfumo, thanked the local sponsors for coming on board to prop up the growing sport.
He said most of the youngsters were unemployed which meant most of them could not pay subscriptions to the club.
“To uphold the club we rely on subscriptions and this has been a problem with the rugby section. But when the corporate world starts coming on board, this will become a major boost not only to prop up the sport but to also spruce up the rugby field, which needs maintenance,” said Mapfumo.
The unveiling ceremony also ushered in the new ZRU Manicaland board now chaired by Josiah Borerwe, with the former chairman, Richard Chiwandire being elevated to president.
Morgan Ruchiwo is the new vice-chairman, while Munetsi was retained as the secretary, with George Mufute and Brandon Chombo as committee members and provincial development officers.
Tomorrow, in the other league matches that will be played at Old Hararians Club, Police Defenders will take on Old Georgians, with the defending champions Sportivo taking on Old Hararian in a potential thriller which will be a repeat of last year’s final.
