BULAWAYO’S three-time provincial drum majorettes champions Msiteli High School have declared their readiness to make it another successful campaign at the ZITF championships today.
Msiteli High School who came third at the national competition held at the same venue last year, have made their aspirations clear that they want to land the national trophy. Msiteli coach Nonhlanhla Ndlovu said they are ready to take the challenge to next the level.
“We have been doing well here in Bulawayo, three times champions in a row which is a big achievement, so this time we feel we have to put more effort to up our standards so that we can outclass Harare schools who always win the Trade Fair event,” she said.
Ndlovu said the sport is essential to groom the girl child to be a leader and a princess at the same time.
“Drummies have a culture which grooms a girl child to be a princess and a leader as discipline is highly valued in sport. We like to thank the support of parents and the school’s administration,” she said.
Zengeza 1 and Glen View are the Harare schools attending this year’s event while Bulawayo has Mpopoma, Founders, Msiteli, Amhlophe, Magwegwe, Pumula and Townsend High Schools. Two Youth Centres, Mzilikazi and Sizinda are also expected compete.
The winners of the competition will walk away with a floating trophy and prize money. There would be a trophy for the best cheerleader.
Assistant chief judge Mark Zulu said the competition was gaining recognition in schools nationwide.
“The sport is really growing and there are a lot of people developing interest and support. We like to show gratitude to our sponsors Coca Cola for their continued support,” said Zulu.
