YOUTHFUL artistes Msiz’kay, Vuyo Brown, Mzistozz Mfanafuthi, Mlue Jay and Bhila have been unveiled as supporting acts for the much-anticipated #FillUpTheSittingRoom gig curated by songstress, Noluntu J.
The announcement comes on the heels of Noluntu J’s recent public dispute with organisers and management at Nexus Rooftop, a bar and restaurant in Bulawayo, where she performed alongside South African musician MaWhoo.
After the show, she expressed disappointment over the treatment of local artistes, citing poor sound during her set, lack of professionalism, and the failure by organisers to provide her team with a proper sitting area.
The matter escalated into a social-media storm, with Nexus management responding that the complaints were “noise without action,” further arguing that some artistes “can’t fill their own sitting room for a show.”

In response, Noluntu J, who had been the most vocal about the issue, decided to take matters into her own hands by organising a show where she could set her own standards and demonstrate how artistes should be treated. That is how the #FillUpTheSittingRoom concept came about.
In an interview, ahead of Thursday’s show, Noluntu J said preparations for the event, aimed at empowering fellow artistes and demonstrating that they can take charge of their own careers, are at an advanced stage. “When I raised concerns about how I was mistreated at a certain event, most people, including event runners, said artistes should start organising their own shows. One of the managers even commented that he wouldn’t listen to an artiste who can’t fill up their own sitting room. “So, I decided to turn that into a concept and called it #FillUpTheSittingRoom,” said Noluntu J.

The event will be held at the Bulawayo Theatre, with tickets already on sale.
“So far, we have secured Msiz’kay, Bhila, Vuyo Brown, and Mzistozz to perform with me. People have been buying tickets, and some have even reached out offering help, so things are going according to plan,” she said.
One of the supporting acts, Msiz’kay said, he is honoured to be part of Noluntu J’s event.
“I’m honoured to be part of Noluntu J’s Fill Up the Sitting Room event because she’s doing something important, not just standing up for herself, but for all artistes. My set will be short and sweet, as I’ll sample a couple of my new songs. It will be a ‘love letter’ of good music to all my fans,” he said.

Bhila expressed his excitement at being part of the show’s line-up, saying it is an honour to share the stage with creatives he admires.
“I believe for artistes to come together and support each other is the way forward. Initiatives like this help us grow, because in life, no one succeeds alone, we all need people willing to support us. This show is exactly about that,” said Bhila.

Afro-jazz songbird Vuyo Brown said she is open to supporting local artistes’ initiatives, as long as they are driven by a good cause.
“Noluntu J asked me to be part of the event, and I didn’t hesitate. I’m more than happy to support a little sister in realising her dreams. If my presence on the line-up helps her achieve her goal, then I’m glad to be part of it. My set will feature fan favourites, and I know the audience will enjoy it,” she said. — @mthabisi_mthire
