VARSITY students, MSU registered their second consecutive draw when they were held to a nil-all by visiting FC Platinum Under-19s in a Zifa Central Soccer League fixture played at Mkoba Stadium over the weekend. The result saw the “Varsity Sharks” as the university outfit is affectionately known losing its grip on the chasing pack as they are now nine points behind log leaders Chapungu who have now collected 33 points in 13 matches and four behind second placed Chrome Stars who have 28 points.

MSU last week settled for another goalless draw with Chapungu in a city derby and despite going for two games without scoring a goal, Godfrey Chuchu, the MSU mentor believes his team is within the targets they set themselves when the season started.

“Of course going for two games without a win is something which is not good but look we are still within our targets we set ourselves when the season begun that is to finish in the top four. We are not fighting for promotion but building a team to do the job for us next season.

“I am satisfied with our performance so far what is now needed is for us to consolidate our position by picking ourselves up and collecting maximum points in the next matches,” he said.

While the varsity students were drawing, run away leaders, Chapungu bounced back from a two-match lean spell to register a convincing 4-0 win over Silo United.

The airmen who have now scored 38 goals had gone for 180 minutes without scoring a goal after being held to goalless draw in successive matches by Chrome Stars and MSU.

Elsewhere, Chrome Stars maintained pressure on Chapungu after dispatching army side Tongogara 2-0 in a Kwekwe derby while John Phiri’s tenure at Beitbridge based municipal side, Town United  got off to a flying start when his side dismantled Jessie Mine 2-0 away in Gwanda.

The result saw the border town side climbing the log standings to fourth position.
