A MIDLANDS State University lecturer, Prosper Mupa, learned a hard roadside lesson after he was slapped with a negligent driving conviction in Bulawayo.
Mupa appeared before Magistrate Themba Chimiso who fined him US$200, payable by 26 January. Failure to pay will earn him four months in the cooler.
Prosecutor Arnold Mudekunye told the court that on 2 April around 12 noon, Mupa was cruising along JMN Nkomo Street in a Nissan Primera with three passengers on board. At the same time, Vezubuhle Ndlovu was driving his Honda Fit along Masotsha Ndlovu Way, with one passenger.

At the intersection of JMN Nkomo and Masotsha Ndlovu, the lecturer and the Honda Fit collided, turning the junction into an impromptu panel beating workshop.
Mupa’s car suffered damage to the front left passenger door, left view mirror and left fender. Ndlovu’s Honda Fit did not escape the chaos either, taking hits to the front bonnet, right front light and front fender.
Luckily no one was injured, except the two cars that left the scene looking like they needed counselling.
The court found Mupa negligent for driving at an excessive speed and failing to keep a proper lookout.
Ndlovu told the court that the crash was more than metal against metal as he relies on his Honda Fit to take his children to school and earns a living through inDrive. For now, he is stuck with a dented bonnet and no income.
