OVER 300 Midlands State University lecturers and staff members were allocated low-density residential stands in Gweru on Saturday.
The lecturers and staff members were each given a residential stand measuring 1 500 square metres in Hertfordshire. River Valley Properties director Mrs Smelly Dube said the programme reinforces Government’s efforts to provide decent accommodation to the majority as outlined in the National Housing Delivery Strategy.
“The programme is in tandem with Zim-Asset’s Infrastructure and Utilities, the Social Services and Poverty Eradication clusters which aim at delivering 250 000 housing units and serviced stands in the next four years. The country has an estimated backlog of 1,25 million people on the housing waiting list and we have a role to achieve that.
“They contributed towards the residential stands for two years. There have been hurdles after their money was garnished from them and not remitted to us,” she said.
Mrs Dube said the residential area will comprise of a shopping mall among other vital infrastructure.
“The area has 2 900 residential stands including those for schools, churches and business premises which will enhance the beauty of the city.
One of the beneficiaries and Media Studies lecturer, Mr Caven Masuku, said he was impressed with the development in the residential area.
