Mtukudzi’s ‘new baby’

knows how to pamper himself.
The music maestro’s latest acquisition – a Land Rover Discovery 4 – could act as an early birthday treat and something to show for his hard work.
But who can blame Tuku? After all, he has to endure long hours of flights and jet leg as he travels around the world for concerts.
Only a fortnight ago, there was a furore at the Castle Tankard when the “Tozeza Baba” singer emerged from his pimped up black Land Rover with a personalised number plate.
This time, he did not go for his totem “Samanyanga” but instead he chose “Tuku”, his often used nickname.
Fans went and fell all over each other trying to catch a glimpse of the “new baby”.
“Iyi ndiyo simbi yamudhara,” one fan said.
Another excited fan was seen taking pictures of Tuku behind the wheel.
“Izvi ndozvako manje,” another fan said.
Others looked from a distant in awe at the sparkling car.
Although Tuku, by virtue of being a superstar, has turned heads wherever he goes, this time it appears many heads will spin as fans marvel at his car.
Contacted for comment, Shepherd Mutamba, Tuku’s publicist, said: “A car is a personal thing and we can’t discuss that in public.”
According to one Harare car dealer, the Land Rover Discovery 4 is worth US$110 000 for the SE and US$130 000 for the HSE version.
Previously, Tuku used to roll in a white Jeep Grand Cherokee.
And there is no doubt that his former baby, the Cherokee, has outlived his new status.
Away from the cars and music, Tuku is building a multimillion-dollar Pakare Paye Arts Centre in Norton which has the state-of-the art studio, lodge, conference facility, a shop, restaurant and concert venue.
The arts centre that serves as a bedrock of raw talent has churned out talented artistes the likes of AY Band and Munya Mataruse, to mention just two.
The centre is one of the biggest investments by an individual without any funding from Government.
