The midfielder collapsed and nearly died during the Trotters’ FA Cup tie against Spurs in March — he was kept alive artificially for 78 minutes — but has since made an astonishing recovery .
And thanks to an equally astonishing piece of medical gadgetry, the 24-year-old could soon be back on the pitch.
Muamba is to have a mini-defibrilator surgically implanted into his armpit. As soon as the device detects an abnormal heartbeat, it will automatically administer an electric shock to return him to normal.
The presence of the device will not stop the midfielder from playing again, however, and he is expected to make an appearance on the training pitch before the end of the season — though any involvement in a competitive match is still some way off.
Fans have already hailed the incredible twist as the Zaire-born star continues his recovery.
“When we were talking in the early stages of his recovery, you just hoped he could come back and have some quality of life with his family,” said Dave Blackburn of
Bolton Wanderers Supporters’ Association.
“Playing again never came into it.
“We all know he’s a fit lad but to hear he could be playing again so soon after what happened is completely beyond belief. It’s an absolute miracle.” — PA Sport.
