Muchaneta, a situational comedy (sitcom) that explores serious social issues on a lighter note premieres on ZBCtv tonight.
With a star-studded cast including ZiFM’s Sokostina and P.O Box comedian Bhutisi, the show with 13 episodes will air at 7PM every Thursday.
“Muchaneta is a situational comedy that exploits various social themes, from love to marriage and broken relationships. It’s about a mother who challenges her son’s marriage to a younger girl and pushes him to marry an older lady.
“It’s basically about reversed roles in society,” the sitcom’s producer – Nick Zemura said.
Zemura, a talented filmmaker, who travelled back to America where he is based yesterday, said he had been in Zimbabwe to work on the sitcom.
“I wrote Muchaneta two years ago and as I was doing so, I’d certain people in mind. I actually developed the character Tambu with Sokostina in mind.
“I knew she was talented even though it was going to be her first time to act. And she never disappointed as her acting was polished from the word go,” he said.
On Bhutisi, Zemura said he had roped him in because of his tried and tested TV talent.
“I also included Bhutisi because I didn’t doubt his capabilities. He’s been exceptionally good and I know that this comedy series will be the best,” said Zemura.
Sokostina, a vibrant radio personality and activist who plays the role of Tambudzai – Josphat’s sister and Muchaneta’s sister-in-law said the series tackles everyday life in the ghetto.
She said working on the series was no walk in the park, especially considering it was her first time.
“Someone should’ve told me that acting is hard work. I no longer have a social life, it takes your all,” said Sokostina (real name Tendai Garwe).
Bhutisi (real name Admire Kuzhangandira) who plays the role of Josphat said he wanted to change people’s perceptions through his role on the series.
“People think I’m a one-hit wonder who can’t sustain a whole film/series performance. Muchaneta for me was an opportunity to change that perception,” Bhutisi said.
“I want to thank Zemura for not doubting my capability and promise my fans a good show.”
Others who feature on the show are Mai Bhasikhoro, Kessia, Eddington Hatitongwe and Rumbidzai Mapfumo.
