ADVOCATE Jacob Mudenda, the Speaker of Zimbabwe’s Parliament, recently shared a prominent platform with Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican in Rome. During the significant encounter, he urged global parliamentarians to embrace the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within the religious sphere, specifically highlighting its potential to enhance African traditional spirituality.
Advocate Mudenda’s impassioned plea was delivered at the recent Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Interfaith Dialogue in Italy, an event that also afforded him the opportunity to meet the esteemed leader of the Roman Catholic Church.
Addressing an assembly of parliamentarians from across the world, Advocate Mudenda underscored the profound responsibility inherent in public office. He emphasised that lawmakers must engage thoughtfully and theologically with matters of religion and belief.
“Failing to do so risks parliamentarians struggling to craft comprehensive legislation that genuinely promotes interfaith dialogue and upholds the inherent fundamental rights and freedoms associated with human dignity in worship.”
The Speaker further warned that inadequate parliamentary oversight of the executive could lead to weak supervision, ultimately undermining the representative role of parliamentarians in matters of faith and eroding public trust.
“One effective way to address this challenge is for parliamentarians to utilise Artificial Intelligence (AI) in navigating the intricate landscape of various religions and beliefs, including the often-unexplored realms of African traditional spirituality,” Advocate Mudenda proposed.
He clarified that AI represents a significant digital advancement with the potential to greatly benefit society, provided its application does not compromise human identity, dignity, or fundamental freedoms. The Speaker also called for careful consideration of AI’s societal role, stressing that it should serve humanity rather than replace it.
Advocate Mudenda highlighted that a key application of AI in interfaith dialogue is its advanced language translation capabilities, which can bridge communication gaps across linguistic and cultural divides. He added that AI can facilitate the delivery of tailored content that reflects a broad spectrum of religious perspectives.
“Furthermore, AI has revolutionised traditional methods of scriptural analysis and other doctrinal, faith-based theologies. Parliamentarians and religious leaders can leverage AI algorithms for predictive data analytics to enhance interfaith dialogue and foster sustainable, humane coexistence.”
He emphatically stressed that both parliamentarians and religious leaders bear a critical responsibility in shaping the ethical governance of AI.
He affirmed the widespread consensus that parliamentarians must engage in dialogue with religion and belief to gain public trust and instil hope in humanity.
“They must be pilgrims of hope the kind of hope the late Pope Francis affirmed, stating that hope does not disappoint, and its first sign should be the desire for peace in our world, which once again finds itself immersed in the tragedy of war,” he said.
The event marked the culmination of the IPU Interfaith Dialogue, which ran from June 19 to 21. It brought together Members of Parliament and religious leaders from around the globe to discuss and propose strategies for achieving global religious harmony, understanding, and cross-faith collaboration.
During the ceremony, Pope Leo XIV delivered a poignant address, extending a warm welcome to delegates from 68 countries. He underscored their profound responsibility to promote the welfare of all, particularly the vulnerable and marginalised, famously describing politics as the highest form of charity.
Advocate Mudenda and his delegation were also granted the privilege of passing through the Holy Door of Saint Peter’s Basilica — a deeply meaningful ritual within the Catholic faith symbolising mercy, renewal and community.
He later toured the Vatican, immersing himself in its rich history and architectural grandeur.
“Highlights of the tour included the breathtaking Sistine Chapel, adorned with Michelangelo’s masterpieces and St Peter’s Basilica, where the awe-inspiring dome and intricate artworks reflect centuries of faith and artistry,” read a statement from Parliament.
The delegation also participated in discussions on interfaith initiatives, exploring the Vatican’s pivotal role as a global leader in promoting peace and understanding among diverse cultures.
“Advocate Mudenda expressed gratitude for the opportunity to meet with Pope Leo XIV and reiterated Zimbabwe’s unwavering commitment to advancing interfaith harmony both nationally and internationally,” the statement concluded.
