Mufakose man jailed for selling dagga-laced sweets

Tinotenda Muronzi (26) of Nyahukwe village in Rusape appeared before Rusape magistrate, Mr Tendai Mahwe, who convicted him of robbery and sentenced him to an effective four years after suspending one year on condition of good behaviour.

A 36-year-old man from Mufakose has been sentenced to three months in prison by the Harare Magistrates’ Court after being convicted of unlawful possession and distribution of dangerous drugs.

Norman Chirume was arrested on January 16, 2025, after detectives from CID Drugs and Narcotics Harare raided his home following a tip-off.

The police were alerted that Chirume was manufacturing and distributing dagga-laced sweets, commonly known as Ganja chocolates, with a particular focus on targeting youth in the community.

A search of his premises led to the recovery of 270 dagga-laced sweets, 75 dagga nuggets in brown trays, chocolate bars, aluminium foil, trays, and loose dagga.

The total street value of the seized items was estimated at ZIG$ 5,175.

Preliminary tests confirmed the presence of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) — the psychoactive component in cannabis — in the chocolates.

All recovered items were sent to the Forensic Laboratory and later presented in court as evidence.

Chirume was convicted and handed a custodial sentence as authorities continue efforts to crack down on drug-related crimes in the capital.
