Mufakose Queens end hiatus

ONE of the pioneers of women football in Zimbabwe, Mufakose Queens, marked their return to the fold in style with a 7-0 drubbing of Chinhoyi Queens at Mufakose Number One Ground yesterday.

Mufakose Queens had appeared to have become a part of history after spending the last six years in the doldrums owing to a financial crisis that crippled their operations and forced them out of action.

They are now back, albeit in the Northern Region Division One League, thanks to a sponsorship deal they struck with Fineye Panel Beaters.

Yesterday, the hosts were all guns blazing from the first whistle as they ran riot against the Chinhoyi team, scoring three goals in the first half. It was in the second period that they turned back the hands of time with a vintage show during which they added four more goals.

Their polished performance charmed their benefactor, Albert Kaseke, who watched the match.

The youthful Mufakose-bred businessman is on a quest to fulfil his late mother’s dream, who was an avid Mufakose Queens fan and always wanted to see women football thrive in the country.

“As Fineye Panel Beaters we are happy to finally see Mufakose Queens back on the local football scene after a six-year absence.

“My heart was pained by the absence of Mufakose Queens from our local leagues.

“The team was founded by my mother hence I thought of reviving the team under the sponsorship of my company Fineye and I am happy with the way they have started.

“These are signs of good days to come.

“As part of honouring my mother who was the founder of the team we are going to be supporting the club with all their needs,” said Kaseke.

Mufakose Queens captain, Rutendo Madongorere, described her team’s massive win as “a warning to all our opponents in the Northern Region Division One league’’.

Madongorere said they were targeting a quick return to the top-flight where they believe they belong.

“We are very delighted to be back.

“Football is our life and for most of us here our livelihoods depend on football hence we would like to thank our sponsor Kaseke for according us an opportunity to do what we enjoy doing.

“It is really exciting to restart our journey with such a massive win and more is yet to come as our main target is to get promoted into the top-flight,” said Madongorere.

Since the revival of the team last year, Mufakose Queens are now home to more than 50 females from the high-density suburb.
