PRESIDENT Robert Mugabe left the country yesterday afternoon on a week-long private visit to Singapore.
George Charamba, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services, said the President will use the visit to undergo “a routine eye check-up”.
President Mugabe showed obvious discomfort with his right eye during Independence celebrations in Harare on April 18.
The Zanu-PF leader has made several trips to Singapore since 2011, most of them prompted by eye problems.
On the eve of his 90th birthday in February, he made a trip to Singapore which Charamba said was for the “second eye procedure” on his left eye, revealing that the right eye had already been operated on.
President Mugabe was seen off at the Harare International Airport by Vice President Cde Joice Mujuru, the Senior Minister of State in the Office of the President and Cabinet Cde Simon Khaya Moyo, Information, Media and Broadcasting Services Minister, Professor Jonathan Moyo, Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet Dr Misheck Sibanda, service chiefs and other senior government officials.
Meanwhile, Cde Mujuru is acting President.
