FORMER Zimbabwe Warriors striker William Mugeyi (pictured) has taken another step in his coaching career after being unveiled as the new assistant coach of Chegutu Pirates.
The appointment sees the former national team forward join head coach Wellington Shangiwa on the technical bench as the club moves to strengthen its coaching department ahead of the next phase of the campaign.
Mugeyi, widely regarded as one of Zimbabwe’s finest leftbacks of his generation, brings a wealth of football knowledge and experience to the Pirates’ dugout. His arrival is expected to add value to the team’s preparations, player development and overall tactical approach as the club seeks improved performances.
During his playing career, Mugeyi established himself as a respected figure both locally and in South Africa.
After hanging up his boots, Mugeyi remained deeply involved in football, making the transition into coaching as he sought to share his experience and help develop the next generation of players.
Chegutu Pirates believe the player’s vast experience will be an important addition to the technical team as they continue building a competitive outfit.
In a statement, the club said Mugeyi’s appointment was part of their commitment to strengthening the team’s structures and bringing in experienced football minds.
“We are delighted to welcome William Mugeyi to our technical team as assistant coach. His experience, knowledge of the game and understanding of player development will be valuable as we continue working towards achieving our objectives,” said the club.
“Mugeyi has achieved a lot in football and we believe his presence will complement the work being done by head coach Shangiwa. We are confident that his contribution will help the team continue growing and improving.”
The club added that the decision to bring in a coach of Mugeyi’s calibre was aimed at creating a strong technical foundation while inspiring players to reach their full potential.
The appointment has generated excitement among football followers, with many welcoming the return of one of Zimbabwe’s celebrated football figures to the touchline.
For Mugeyi, the new role presents another opportunity to make his mark in the game, this time by using his experience and knowledge to help shape the fortunes of Chegutu Pirates.

Mugeyi moved to South Africa’s Bushbucks in 1993 alongside his striking twin brother Wilfred where they rose to legendary status because of their contribution to the club and longevity.

I played with both William and Wilfred Mugeyi when I turned up for Circle United in the early 80s. Wilfred was a striker while William played as a left back, at times as a sweeper. This journo is obviously confused. William couldn’t have been a striker/left back whatever the journalist was trying to say. Do these guys check what they write before submitting for publication?
