Mukamba gets Warriors call-up

DENVER Mukamba has been called up to the Warriors squad that assembles today in the capital for a preliminary round tie against Tanzania this weekend. Zimbabwe are expected to meet the east Africans this weekend on the back of a 0-1 loss in Dar es Salaam two Sundays ago. They need nothing short of a win to keep their hopes of a third qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations finals. Zimbabwe have been to the finals in 2004 and 2006 but have failed in the next qualifiers to make the grade.

A win against Tanzania would see the team proceed to the next stage where they will play in group stages before the winners qualify for the finals.
In an interview on the sidelines of the Benjani Mwaruwari soccer tournament in Bulawayo yesterday, head coach Ian Gorowa said they had called up Mukamba to lay a claim to a berth in the team.

The coach said they would also meet Willard Katsande to establish what contributed to him failing to travel home to join camp last week.
‘We will be meeting Katsande. We want to know what happened when he failed to come. We are focused on winning the tie and proceed to the next stage of the tournament,’ said Gorowa.

He said he was saddened by the unavailability of Carrington Nyadombo of AmaZulu in South Africa due to injury. He also lamented the absence of Costa Nhamoinesu who plays in Poland.

“Obviously we would have wanted to have the two in camp. But they have injuries and their papers have been sent to our medical team who are convinced it’s serious injuries,’’ said Gorowa who is confident that the team will pull through.
