THOMAS “Mukanya” Mapfumo’s family is gutted by the death of revered percussionist, Lancelot Kashesha Mapfumo, on Sunday.

Lancelot, the younger brother of Mukanya, succumbed to cancer in the United States.

He was 69.

Family spokesperson, Blessing Ivan Vava, said Lancelot was a multi-instrumentalist who contributed immensely to the development of Chimurenga music, although he was synonymous with playing congas.

“We are still in shock as he was an exceptional and gifted musician, as well as a responsible father,” said Vava.

“It is with the deepest regret that we, the Mapfumo family, confirm the passing on of our beloved father, husband, granddad and brother Lancelot Mapfumo.

“Lancelot died after a long battle with cancer.”

Vava said burial arrangements were yet to be finalised.

“Arrangements for the burial will be announced in due course.

“At this moment in time, we ask for privacy and time to heal in this time of grief,” said Vava.

Lancelot was one of the surviving members of the original Blacks Unlimited Band, having played together with his brother Thomas.

He was an integral part of the band from 1976.

Lancelot is survived by wife Eunice, two daughters Tabeth and Cleopatra, and four grandchildren.
