THOMAS “Mukanya” Mapfumo’s nephew, Kurai Makore, believes Chimurenga music is in safe hands.
The 34-year-old appears to be following in his uncle’s big shoes.However, he concedes he is trying to scale Mount Everest.
“I am happy fans have embraced me as I am. I am also glad that I got the blessings of my uncle.
“He told me that he will give me advice to make it in music and not money to record or market my music.
“I understand his philosophy because he wants me to be a strong man in music,” he said.
Kurai believes he has what it takes to keep the family legacy going on.
“As an artist, I am determined to ensure that the seed planted by my uncle keeps on bearing fruits.
“As you know, our family name is Makore and I am willing to ensure that his wish of maintaining the legacy and family name is kept alive.
“If I was a copycat, I could have adopted Mapfumo as my surname or moniker but I have decided to use Makore, the same surname he uses on his official documents” he said.
His consistency saw him getting a slot at the Africa Explosion gig headlined by Congolese rhumba giants last month in Kadoma.
He has also won a permanent slot at Madhadha Pub & Grill in Waterfalls.
“Getting a permanent slot is every artist’s wish at a time when it is hard to organise our own shows.
“On Sundays, I perform in Waterfalls and I am guaranteed a permanent slot which has made my job easier,” he said.
To date, Makore boasts of two albums to his credit namely Gara Unzwe and Ngoma Kurira.
