Mukukula new HBA president

Andrew Chitauro is the new secretary-general after beating his challengers Charmaine Chamboko and Itayi Chafota who had three and one vote respectively.
Martin Mukweva comes in as the technical commission president while Sandra Chatumba leads the women and youth commission.

Tinashe Mushenje amassed eight votes against Eric Banda’s six to win the athletes commission portfolio and Simba Mugomezi was unopposed for the competitions committee.
Mukukula said there is a lot of work to be done and will take teamwork to change the game for the better.

“Now that I have been elected, it gives me the chance to do more for the sport that I love,” said Mukukula.
“This is the sport we have been dedicated to for half of our life, it’s a sport we want to see rise and the truth is that I am just an individual but I am thinking that I am the person who can ignite that passion from the people, so that together we can work collectively for the betterment of the sport.

“There is a lot of work to do. We want to take basketball to where we are expected by the stakeholders.”
The 42-year-old said they were looking at broadening their managerial structures and engage schools through the Ministry of Education, Sport, Arts and Culture to improve the sport.

“We want to broaden our managerial structures so that we can bring other offices like marketing and public relations because we believe that is the engine as well as technical for development of the game.

“We want to create a product we can sell to the corporate world.
“We are thinking of attending to our facilities and equipment. We want to bring back the 24-second shot clock, we believe it will encourage people to score more baskets, as well as improve our equipment.

“We want to go for the education for our coaches, managers and officials. There is a very big need of education of basketball.
“When working with schools we are hoping we can cooperate and nurture kids who can choose basketball as a career. We want t kick start that programme but obviously it will take long,” said Mukukula.

The new executive board is expected to meet this evening for an induction.
