ZIMBABWEAN goalkeeper Tatenda Mkuruva will remain in goal for Detroit City.
The American soccer club confirmed yesterday that it has renewed the Zimbabwean’s contract for the 2026 USL Championship season.
The deal keeps the 30-year-old in Detroit for one more year.
Mkuruva first signed with the team in early 2025. That contract included a team option to extend, which the club has now chosen to use.
“Detroit City Football Club announced today that Zimbabwean goalkeeper Tatenda Mkuruva has signed a one-year contract for the 2026 USL Championship season,” the club said in a statement.
“He will wear number 16 for Le Rouge.”
Mkuruva went to Detroit after a long stay with the Michigan Stars. He was the Stars’ captain and main goalkeeper from 2019 until his move last year. Before that, he played for Dynamos back home and Cape Town City in South Africa.
A source close to the player said the new deal brings peace of mind.
“Tatenda wanted to stay here,” said a source close to the player. “He feels at home in Detroit. Last year was about learning the system. Now he wants to continue proving his importance in the team and wants to help this team win a title.”
The source added that Mkuruva turned down interest from two other USL teams to remain with Detroit City.
“He wants to be where the fans love him and where the coaches trust him. That is here. He believes this club is going to do something special in 2026.”
‘‘Despite other interests from other clubs, he chose to stay and decided to extend his stay with the club.”
