started building a multi-million-dollar regional bus terminus, truck inn, bonded warehouse and a clearing house near the roundabout at KuMbudzi.
The commercial centre will have “an upmarket and low end of market” features.
Harare town clerk Dr Tendai Mahachi, a key figure in structuring the deal, yesterday confirmed work had started at the site.
Workmen were yesterday excavating the site for the construction of a bonded warehouse and that they would soon start on the bus terminus.
The commuting public has often complained on the poor status of Mbudzi owing to muggings and robberies to travellers. Complaints were also that Harare was not making use of prime land and was not providing alternative bus boarding and disembarking places after it became evident Mbare Musika was failing to meet demand.
The new development is expected to unlock the value of the place as new businesses will automatically be attracted to a busy centre.
“Yes I can confirm work has begun. Sunshine Holdings – a joint venture company between the city and Augur Investments is doing the development.
“There are going to be four key entities – a regional bus terminus, a truck inn, a huge bonded warehouse and a commercial centre,” said Dr Mahachi.
Dr Mahachi said the commercial centre would have upmarket facilities as well as those to cater for the lower rungs of society.
“We are looking at empowering our people. We will give them market places,” he said.
He said the truck inn would be for cross border trucks to park overnight.
He said the regional bus terminus would be modelled alongside Central Park Station in Johannesburg, South Africa.
He said construction would be complete in five years.
Harare has entered into a number of joint venture agreements with Augur Investments that include the construction of Airport Road, construction of 800 upmarket houses and a hotel at the Warren Hills Golf Course.
