Multitudes gathered at the National Heroes Acre in Harare yesterday to pay their final respects to National Hero, Cde Tinaye Elisha Nzirasha Chigudu.
The shrine was filled to capacity as people from across the country began arriving as early as 7 a.m.
The atmosphere was vibrant, with singing, chanting, and dancing dominating the ceremony.
One of the prominent chants, led by the Young Women for ED group, was “2030 VaMnangagwa vanenge varimo muOffice” (By 2030, President Mnangagwa will still be in office).
Cde Chigudu, a former Governor and Zanu PF provincial chairperson for Manicaland Province, as well as a distinguished civil servant, died on Wednesday last week.
President Mnangagwa declared him a National Hero in honour of his lifelong dedication to Zimbabwe’s liberation and development.
Mr Edgar Chigudu, speaking on behalf of the family, described his brother as an icon and a man of principle. He expressed gratitude to President Mnangagwa and the Government for conferring National Hero status on Cde Chigudu.
“He was a man of protocol who always respected hierarchy. Though deeply political, he was approachable and open to frank discussions,” Edgar said. He added that Cde Chigudu left a lasting legacy of love for his family and commitment to his country.
Information, Publicity, and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr Jenfan Muswere, shared a personal connection with Cde Chigudu, whom he described as a father figure.
Dr Muswere recounted how Cde Chigudu guided him after the death of his own father, teaching him about politics, governance, and the importance of fighting imperialism.
“He constantly reminded us of the struggles under the illegal white regime and urged young people to defend Zimbabwe’s independence and fight against sanctions,” Dr Muswere said.
Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs and Devolution Advocate Misheck Mugadza praised Cde Chigudu’s leadership and work ethic.
“He was straightforward, hardworking, and time-conscious. Even after retirement, he remained a valuable advisor on development and political matters,” he said.
Cde David Parirenyatwa, a member of the Zanu PF Council of Elders, highlighted Cde Chigudu’s discipline and dedication.
“He was a stern disciplinarian who loved order and respect. His recognition as a National Hero is well-deserved,” he said.
Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Affairs Deputy Minister Headman Moyo also paid tribute to the National Hero, recalling Cde Chigudu’s early involvement in the liberation struggle under ZIPRA. “He was a principled cadre who worked tirelessly for the nation,” he said.
President Mnangagwa, accompanied by the First Lady Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa, presided over the burial ceremony.
Also in attendance to witness the national hero’s burial were Vice Presidents Constantino Chiwenga and Kembo Mohadi along with Cabinet Ministers, service chiefs, senior Government officials and members of the Zanu PF Politburo and Central Committee.
Cde Chigudu’s burial was a fitting tribute to a man who dedicated his life to Zimbabwe’s liberation, development, and the empowerment of future generations. His legacy will continue to inspire the nation as it works toward achieving Vision 2030.
