Munetsi speaks out after scoring first Premier League goal

Marshall Munetsi has opened up after scoring his first goal in the English Premier League as a Wolverhampton Wanderers player.

The 28-year-old former South Africa’s Orlando Pirates midfielder has played four league games for Wolverhampton Wanderers. He has also featured in an FA Cup match.

In all those matches, the Zimbabwean international has been fixed as a forward, away from his favourite central midfield role.

Nevertheless, he has proved to be versatile after putting in decent shifts for the Vitor Pereira-coached side. Plausibly, he now has one goal and one assist under his belt.

He scored the equaliser on Saturday night when they drew 1-1 with Everton in a match that was played at the Molineux Stadium.

Additionally, Munetsi became the first Zimbabwean to score in the EPL since former Jomo Cosmos forward Benjani Mwaruwari. Mwaruwari scored in January 2011 for Blackburn Rovers in an English Premier League game.

Reacting to his goal, Munetsi said his teammates and coach spurred him to be hopeful of scoring despite missing the target in his initial games.

“It feels good. It’s been coming, and I think in the last couple of games, I had chances to score. But obviously, in football, you can never predict when you’re going to score.

“But I think the coach and the players have always had that faith in me to keep on pushing and scoring.

“Benjani [Mwaruwari] was a pivotal player for us in Zimbabwe and, historically, he paved the way for us Zimbabweans.”

Munetsi added: “We have a lot of quality in the team, and if the coach asks me to play in a certain role with the tactics that we had, if we want to press from the front. This is something that he asked from us to put more pressure on the defence. I’m able to do that.

“It’s something that we always try to work on and playing as a striker, playing on the wing, or playing as a midfielder. For me, it’s not a problem, as long as I’m able to help the team.” (farpost.co.za)
