MUNGONI Nomphembe Chikove is not an ordinary man. He is a 40-year-old bodybuilder from Bulawayo, who was born with a disability that affects his ability to walk. But he does not let that stop him from pursuing his passion for fitness and sports.
Chikove goes to the gym every day after work and lifts weights that would challenge even the most able-bodied person. He has also participated in several bodybuilding competitions and won some prizes.

His ultimate goal is to compete in the Paralympics and show the world what he is capable of.
“I aim to be a beast. I know I will get there and I enjoy going to the gym. I want those that were born and live with disability like me to learn and understand that anything is possible,” said Chikove.
He is not only a bodybuilder, but also a rugby enthusiast. Chikove is a former student of King George IV School and a volunteer for the tag rugby trust. He is involved in the “I Am Able Through Rugby” (IATR) programme where he referees and coaches other people with disabilities at the Bulawayo Zimcare centres. He also referees for the Bulawayo tag rugby team. Chikove hopes to establish his own rugby team.
“I love rugby and one day I will establish a team. I am making considerable strides and as you know I referee at some games. I look at athletes like myself and those who are even worse off, without any arms and legs and they show you that nothing is impossible, you can push your limits,” he said.
Chikove is an inspiration to many people, especially those who face similar challenges as him. He does not let his disability affect his mental well-being, but rather uses it to motivate others. He sometimes uses a wheelchair but he always tries to walk on his own. Chikove also gives talks to people living with disabilities and encourages them to improve their skills and overcome their difficulties.

“I get assistance sometimes from people in the gym, even the instructors, they always encourage me and this drives me to excel,” said Chikove.
“I feel a great satisfaction with the talks I give to people living with disabilities. I wish to see more people participating in sport because I believe it is one of the most wonderful activities which can lead a person to live a healthier life as well as help them to fight challenges.”
