A MUTARE City Council cop was last week arraigned before the courts for allegedly assaulting a taxi driver before robbing him of his Samsung S3 cellphone and $100.
Fungai Gopito (26) of House Number 68, Zororo, Sakubva appeared before magistrate, Miss Venencia Mugota facing two counts of assault and theft.
He pleaded not guilty and was remanded out of custody to March 30 on $40 bail.
Representing the State was Mr Fletcher Karombe.
The court heard that on March 4 at Afripot Night Club, Gopito and six accused persons who are still at large assaulted Takunda Mapara before robbing him of his $100 and a Samsung S3 cellphone.
Mr Karombe said: “Gopito was drinking beer at Afripot Night Club in the company of his friend, Fadzanayi Vint when Gopito approached him.
“Gopito went to the counter to buy beer while holding a $100 note in his hands. He was delayed by the bar lady who was attending to other customers at the other end of the counter.
“Gopito approached him and touched him on the shoulder before punching him once on the right eye. Gopito dragged Mapara outside the night club and took him to a secluded place. He teamed up with his colleagues to assault Mapara several times all over his body before searching him. They robbed him of his $100 and cellphone.
“They ran away from the scene after a passer-by asked them why they were assaulting him,” said Mr Karombe.
