Municipal cops-bashing vendors in the dock

Seven men appeared in court on Wednesday for allegedly stoning and injuring members of the Harare Metropolitan police who were arresting illegal street vendors at the corner of Kwame Nkrumah Avenue and First Street on Monday afternoon.

Nyasha Muchina (25), Bullet Kaitano (27), Innocent Murambiwa (42), James Mudheredhe (37), Petros Kayesa (40), Edward Mamhunze (31) and Fungai Musiyiwa were charged with public violence when they appeared before magistrate Mr Elijah Makomo.

They were remanded in custody to today when their lawyer Mr Obey Shava is expected to make a bail application.

The prosecutor Mrs Idah Maromo alleged that on October 12 at the corner of Kwame Nkrumah Avenue and First Street, the accused persons became violent and threw stones which were being supplied by a vehicle allegedly belonging to the MDC towards members of the Harare Metropolitan Police who were arresting illegal street vendors.
