A SEX scandal has rocked Honde Valley, involving a married woman from the Johane Marange Church, accused of having an affair, and allegedly confessing to being intimate with her lover at a local graveyard.
Talent Nyabanga, a married woman, was accused of desecrating the graveyard by being intimate with Daniel Matongora in it.
The case was brought before Chief Mutasa’s community court last Saturday by Village head Makabvepi, who was acting on a complaint filed by Nyabanga’s father-in-law.
The accusations stemmed from Nyabanga’s purported confession at home and church, rather than witness accounts. Nyabanga is married into the Kofi family.
Village head Makabvepi stated that Nyabanga confessed sleeping with Matongora at the graveyard when questioned about her late return home.
His primary concern was the desecration of the sacred site and shame brought upon the community.
“We did not see this happening. The truth is that she returned home late, and when asked why she was had returned home late, she said she was being intimate with Daniel Matongora at the graveyard. Her confession was out of fear that she had been spotted by someone during the act,” said Village head Makabvepi, adding that Nyabanga’s father-in-law approached him seeking justice.
“The reason why I reported this matter to this court is because Nyabanga’s father-in-law came and reported to me that she was being promiscuous, and had confessed to having sex with her lover at the graveyard. I even have the audios of the confessions she made,” he said, further alleging that the two’s illicit affair began at a village party in Murare.
However, Nyabanga stood her ground, and vehemently denied the accusations, calling Village head Makabvepi a liar.
She argued that she had neither been late home, ever been caught nor confessed to that effect.
“What the village head is saying is a lie. I was never late, and I have never been a topic of discussion in a family meeting. I am married into the Kofi family. I never had any sex with this man at the graveyard or anywhere else. I am not dating him, and we have never been alone together. I honestly do not know where the village head is getting this information from,” she said in defence.
She also challenged the claim that she was punished by the church for promiscuity.
Nyabanga clarified that her previous confession and subsequent shunning by the church stemmed from her decision to take her injured child to the hospital, contrary to the church’s doctrine, rules and beliefs.
“Everyone knows that our church disallows people from visiting the hospital. My child broke his hand, and I took him to the hospital for treatment. As a result, the church shunned me. It was only after I confessed, and asked for forgiveness that they allowed me back. The shunning was a punishment for visiting the hospital, not for being promiscuous,” she explained.
However, Village head Makabvepi disputed her claim, arguing that the confession and shunning were actually related to her alleged infidelity.
He asserted that the church leaders, including those from her husband’s family’s congregation were aware of the situation.
“I wonder why she is lying because everyone knows about her shenanigans. Even their leaders at church know. Because of that story, she was shunned and was almost kicked out of the Johane Marange Church where her husband’s family also attends,” he said.
In his response, Matongora also denied the allegations.
“This village head hates me because he does not want to work with me as I am the village chairman. That is why he wants to tarnish my name. I do not know this woman, and I have never cheated with her,” he said.
Chief Mutasa, presiding over the matter, expressed concerns over the credibility of the claims.
He questioned how a private church confession, as per the Johane Marange Church traditions, had become public knowledge.
“As the court, we are struggling to believe that the woman confessed in church, as what the village head is claiming. According to the Johane Marange Church doctrine, such confessions are a close-guarded secret. How then does a village head, who is not even a member of the church, come to know such details? Besides, why is there no representative of the Kofi family here today?” asked Chief Mutasa.
Chief Mutasa ordered Village head Makabvepi to produce witnesses from the church, who allegedly heard Nyabanga’s confession, along with her father-in-law.
He stated that only with their testimony could the court establish the truth.
The case was subsequently adjourned to May 24 to allow the village head sufficient time to gather his witnesses.
