TRAINOS Muradzikwa and Pride Sembo emerged leaders on the second day of the Hwange Charferfly Golf Open yesterday on a weather affected competition.
While Friday, the opening day of the event was very hot, yesterday it was cool but very windy.
“The golfers have had to deal with two contrasting weather scenarios. Yesterday it was too hot but we did well to have several hydration points on the course.
Today surprisingly it was a bit cool and very windy which took its toll on the golfers. Otherwise so far so good, proceedings have gone according to plan,” said Vumi Moyo, the Hwange Golf Club captain.
Professional golf player Muradzikwa enhanced his chances of improving his position on the Zambezi Tour 2014 Order of Merit with a gross score of 71 yesterday. On Friday he had carded a similar result.
He is seventh on the money list with $2 564 and a good tournament here could boost his earnings into the top five or closer to leader Tongo Charamba who is on $7 030.
South African Nethunzwi Musiwalo had the day and tournament’s best score when in round two yesterday he scored a gross of 69. On the opening day he had 74 on his card.
Third going into the final round is Brian Gondo who has scores of 71, 73 from the first two days of competition.
Thanda Mavundla of South Africa lies fourth after scoring 74, 72 with Steven Ferreira fourth 71, 75.
On fifth spot is Ignatius Mketekete who overcame a poor first round of 76 to score 71 yesterday.
In the amateurs’ elite division, Sembo is leading with 77, 76, John Milanzi is second with scores of 75, 80 and Stephen Hazangwi 78, 81.
Rabson Dumani of Hwange is the best local so far lying sixth.
Grade 7 pupil at Thomas Coulter Primary School, Keith Banda was 40th with scores of 81, 86.
Sponsor Godfrey Nyakudya was happy with the proceedings and high turnout.
“I am impressed with the level of competition and turnout. It has been a good two days and we look forward to an explosive competition on the last day of the tournament. As Charferfly we are committed to continued support of the Hwange Open and the annual Kamandama tournament.”
