MUROWA Diamonds board chairman, Lovemore Chihota has allayed fears that the mine will close following the pull out of global mining giant, Rio Tinto recently.

He said the diamond mine was instead working on boosting production.

Canadian based Rio Tinto, disposed its 78 percent stake in the Zvishavane based diamond mine and Sengwa Coal Mine in Gokwe to Rio Zim ending its 60 years of operations in Zimbabwe in June.

“We as Murowa Diamonds are committed to running this company better than what we found it. There’s no reason why we should fail to run these things for the betterment of our people,” said Chihota.

He said this last Friday during a sponsored eye camp by Murowa Diamonds where Ophthalmologists, Dr Solomon Guramatunhu, Dr Archibald Kufa and Boniface Macheka from Eyes for Africa banner restored sight to more than a 100 people at Shabanie Mine Hospital.

Murowa Diamonds funded the eye camp.

Chihota said the kimberlite diamond mine was committed to assisting local communitieis through its various social responsibility programmes.
