THE National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe (NMMZ) is in the process of determining a site to erect a statue of the late nationalist and Vice-President Dr Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo in Harare. The impending erection of the late veteran nationalist’s statue follows a similar honour in Bulawayo. President Mugabe unveiled the Bulawayo statue of the icon on December 22 last year.
“What we are doing is resolving the exact spot where the statue will be erected. The spot that had been identified is owned by a pension fund and that is the matter we are working to resolve.
“Apart from the site that is owned by the pension fund, we also have alternative sites but at the moment I cannot reveal the alternatives,” said NMMZ executive director Dr Godfrey Mahachi in an interview yesterday.
Dr Nkomo’s statue was initially set for mounting at Karigamombe Building in Harare but there were reservations over the site until the issue spilled to the High Court, which passed a judgment stopping the erection of the monument at the place.
Dr Mahachi said the erection of Dr Nkomo’s statue in Harare was expected to commence as soon as determination of the site was concluded.
“As soon as that matter is resolved, erection will start. The statue has already been developed and in terms of how much the whole project will cost that is also dependent on the site to be identified,” he said.
He said it was their intention to have Dr Nkomo’s statue mounted in Harare in honour of the role he played during the liberation struggle.
