Mushekwi was voted the Nedbank Cup Player of the Tournament on Sunday, beating teammate Hlompo Kekana and Free State Stars’ Paulus Masehe for the award.
A day after his side Mamelodi Sundowns lost the Nedbank Cup final to SuperSport United 2-0, Mushekwi walked away with the R100 000 prize money.
Mushekwi finished the tournament with 10 goals after he powered six past amateur league side Powerlines during the first round when the Brazilians won 24-0.
By winning the award, the former CAPS United forward became the only local to grace the South African Premiership awards winners’ podium at the Lyric Theatre, Gold Reef City, in Johannesburg on Sunday evening.
Mushekwi was in his best form again this year for the Downs in the Nedbank Cup.
The Brazilians reached the final of the Nedbank Cup but lost 0-2 to city rivals Supersport United.
Interestingly, the two goals they conceded in the final were the only goals that Sundowns let in during the tournament.
They had scored 30 goals en-route to the final.
Mushekwi’s Sundowns ended the season without a trophy despite dominating the start of the championship race.
A player clear-out now looms at Sundowns but Mushekwi, who relegated South Africa’s main striker, Katlego Mphela to the bench in the second half of the season, is set to remain at the club.
In the event that he moves, there will be many suitors after Kaizer Chiefs chairman, Motaung, told the Sunday Times at the weekend that the
club was hurt to have missed out on signing Mushekwi.
“VV (Vermezovic) went to Zimbabwe with Bobby to watch Mushekwi play but he said he is not better than what we have,” said Motaung.
“Everybody knows what Nyasha Mushekwi has done for Sundowns.”
The awards night belonged to Siyabonga Nomvete who scooped four top prizes after he was crowned the Premiership’s Player of the Season, Players’ Player of the Season, Footballer of the Year and the Golden Boot winner for his 20 league goals.
