EMERALD ‘Nolimov’ Mushore was crowned the 2023 Steward Bank Easter Open Chess Tournament champion in Harare yesterday.
Mushore beat a large pool of players as he amassed 8,5 points from a possible nine.
The Zimbabwe international managed to outsmart Blessing Moyo to second place on 7,5 points.
Mushore was happy with his win and believes the level of competition has improved. He looks forward to more national events.
“I am happy with the win; it came after I almost quit the game last year and it is a positive win for me.
“The game was tough and interesting at the same time and I am happy for the win,” said Mushore.
Farai Hamandishe was third on seven points with Vitalis Mapuranga and Tapiwa Jele completing the top five.
The women section was won by Paidaishe Zengeni who finished on seven points. She managed to see-off the tie-breaker against Linda Dalistso Shaba and Colleta Wakurewarewa, who were also on seven points.
Nomalungelo Mathe and Valentine Pasipanodya completed the top five places in the women’s section.
The Zimbabwe Chess Federation has this year partnered with Steward Bank for the annual tournament that has seen a record number of players turning up.
The Under-16 tournament was won by Prosper Matyire who was ahead of Jordan Gweshe and Tapiwa Muyambo.
Maita Mangwende was crowned the girls’ Under-16 champion ahead of Joyce Ndemera and Layota Matereke.
This year’s Steward Bank Easter Open Chess Tournament had some foreign flavour with Zambians Greenwell Chinyama, Kantalamba Mushota and Mozambique’s Person Abrantes taking part.
