Music group raises Zim flag high

FAMILY Voices raised the country’s flag high by finishing fourth in the just-ended inaugural Old Mutual Amazing Voices music competition finals held in South Africa.

The competition also had two more representatives from Zimbabwe, namely Rhema and Focus Acapella.

Nine other competitors from Ghana, Kenya and South Africa battled it out across three genres — gospel, pop and R&B — in last Sunday’s final.

Old Mutual Amazing Voices is a pan-African competition designed to discover unsigned singing talent from across the African continent.

The finale, which was aired on DStv’s Zambezi Magic and Mzansi Magic channels on Sunday, had winners being voted for by the public.

The all-male Bulawayo-based gospel group is made up of Michael Sibanda, Bobby James Odendaal, Tinashe Chitsaka, Melusi Sibanda, Nkanyiso Gumbo and Ngonidzashe Musiniwa.

It released its debut album “Time for Breaking Through” in 2014.

Speaking on behalf of the show’s sponsors, Vuyo Lee, Old Mutual chief marketing officer, said the show would be returning for Season Two.

“It has been fantastic supporting people who genuinely aspire to become their exceptional best. We cannot wait to make Season Two even bigger and better.”

The singing competition began airing in January following a gruelling audition process that kicked off in the four countries in September last year.

Lee said during the course of the competition, contestants benefited from the guidance and mentorship of the show’s music director, Zwai Bala.

They also picked up valuable advice on responsible money management at financial education workshops hosted by Old Mutual.

Old Mutual Amazing Voices is a reality music competition.

It seeks to find groups in Kenya, Ghana, Zimbabwe and South Africa of no less than four members who specialise in pop, gospel and RnB.
