The highly-anticipated Legends Night made a remarkable debut in the City of Kings, captivating hundreds of music lovers at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) Hall 2.

Despite the cold weather, fans flocked to the venue for an unforgettable evening of music and celebration, marking a significant milestone for the event, which had previously only been held in Harare.

As the night progressed, various legends were honoured and presented with grocery hampers as tokens of appreciation for their contributions to the growth of Zimbabwean music.

“These are very rare occasions. We usually get noticed when we are dead, but to be remembered while alive is a good gesture,” said Jeys Marabini.

“These young men and women are doing a great thing of reviving our music and that allows our identity to be preserved as Zimbabweans.”

His words resonated deeply with the audience, encapsulating the essence of the evening – a celebration of legacy and cultural pride.

The line-up featured a talented array of musicians with the In Total Band taking centre stage to honour Zimbabwean music legends through beautifully crafted renditions of classic songs.

Local favourite band Fusion set the tone with a vibrant opening performance that resonated with the crowd.

Their energetic set showcased why they are a beloved act in Bulawayo, warming up the audience for the main event. The In Total Band took to the stage at around 7pm, launching into a series of nostalgic cover songs, including “Tozeza Baba,” “Chitekete,” and “Rudo Runokosha.”

Each song stirred memories and emotions, drawing cheers and applause from the enthusiastic audience.

Adding to the evening’s magic, renowned Bulawayo saxophonist Vuyile Nesbert Qongo brought a refreshing jazz element to the show.

His performance included a poignant cover of the late hip-hop sensation Cal_Vin’s “Banjalo Abantu,” which struck a chord with many fans, evoking a wave of nostalgia and emotion.

The atmosphere was electric as the crowd celebrated both past and present musical talent.

As the clock approached 9pm, the In Total Band returned for a second set dedicated to honouring Bulawayo’s musical legends.

This segment featured iconic songs such as Lovemore Majaivana’s “KoNtuthu Ziyathunqa” and Ilanga’s “Shosholoza,” beautifully delivered by Dereck Mpofu.

The highlight of this portion was the appearance of legendary poet Albert Nyathi, who performed his hit “Senzeni Na!” to rousing applause, further enriching the cultural tapestry of the evening.

One of the most memorable moments came when the In Total Band invited the legendary Cool Crooners to join them on stage for a performance of their classic song “Bhilugwe Lami.”

This collaboration not only showcased the rich history of Zimbabwean music but also highlighted the spirit of unity within the arts community.
