ART lovers across Zimbabwe are eagerly awaiting the announcement of nominees for this year’s National Arts Merit Awards (Namas) and, to heighten the anticipation, the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) has unveiled a star-studded performance line-up for the 24th edition of the awards.

Set for February 28 at the Harare International Conference Centre, the ceremony will run under the theme “Fearless Creativity”, promising a vibrant celebration of the country’s artistic excellence, blending seasoned icons with emerging voices.

Following a rigorous selection process from a record 1 117 submissions, covering works produced between December 1, 2024, and November 30, 2025, NACZ has assembled a diverse cast of performers.
Music lovers can expect an electrifying showcase across genres with gospel music being represented by Minister Ellard, Sharon Cherayi and Vabati VaJehova. Dancehall heavyweights Freeman, BaShupi and Junior Spragga will also inject high-energy performances.

Hip-hop will feature Bling4, while Jiti maestro Baba Harare will bring the traditional groove. Afro-jazz and contemporary sounds will come from Plaxedes Wenyika and Dino Mudondo, alongside versatile hitmakers Alexio Kawara and Sane Wavi, Melyssa, Natasha Mlalazi and Cleo Arie.
Adding modern urban flavour is the Chillspot Family, Chillmaster, Fab G, Shone, Lil Eliana and Snowy. The line-up is further strengthened by Runna Rulezi, Dorcas Moyo, Young Gemini, Skhu, mbira legend Sekuru Gudo and Paddington Chiwashira.

Turning to the awards showcase, NACZ director for Arts Promotion and Development Barbara Gotore said the record number of entries reflects the resilience and productivity of local creatives.

“It speaks volumes about the resilience and prolific output of Zimbabwean artistes,” she said.
This year’s edition will be driven by a new management team. Scarlet Studios managing director Reginald Matinanga and Events Evolution chief executive officer Talent Banda have been appointed to oversee production, signalling NACZ’s intent to elevate the quality and experience of the ceremony.
The Namas remain Zimbabwe’s premier arts awards, recognising excellence in music, visual arts, literature, theatre, dance, film, and media. While the nominees always generate excitement, the live performances are a major highlight. —@MbuleloMpofu
