Musician dreams big

Faith Mandizha

Mbira musician, Evelyn ‘‘Livet’’ Singizi, performed at the Hometown Market in Vainona on Friday.

The 23-year-old artist said her music was inspired by social and cultural realities, and hopes to inspire other young girls to dream big and work hard.

She said the late Chiwoniso Maraire was her role model and inspiration.

‘‘Being a woman is my strength and whenever l start to play the mbira in front of an audience, l feel so powerful to spread positive energy.

‘‘I am an activist for the girl child and l hope that my work will get recognition nationally and internationally.

‘‘I have been privileged enough to work with Jackie Mgido and Feli Nandi, who have been an inspiration to me and made a mark as females in the industry despite the lack of equity” she said.

She said music was everything to her, but financial difficulties have been a setback.

She is currently working on an extended playlist which will raise awareness against drugs and substance abuse, and hopes to collaborate with other artists such as Hope Masike before the year ends.

‘‘For me playing the mbira is communication, social commentary, connection as well as passion. The amazing part about music is that it’s the simplest way of healing, to express yourself or to deal with depression.’’
