Musicians pay tribute to SA rapper

Tributes have started pouring in for slain rapper Nkululeko “Flabba” Habedi.

The Skwatta Kamp member was killed in the early hours of the morning at his home in the township of Alexandra, north of Johannesburg.

K.O, a member of the hip-hop group Teargas, credited Flabba for paving the way for them and giving them courage to express themselves in their own languages. “There were only a few individuals who ushered us in, who didn’t consider us as fans and Flabba was one of the first ones,” he said.

“Before I got into the industry, one of the people who gave me more courage to try and master rapping in vernacular was Flabba. He made it cool before the likes of Prokid and others.”

“I want to send my condolences to his family and his fans. This is a sad day for SA hip-hop,” said the “caracara” rapper.

999 record label manager Arthur Mafokate described the rapper’s death as a great loss for the music industry in general. “Hip-hop has come far and he is one of the legends who made it what it is today,” he said.

His Skwatta Kamp family member Slikour remembered his friend as a man with a big heart.

“Everything about him was genuine, whether he was angry or happy. He generally had a big heart, he was a good guy.”

A woman has been arrested in connection with the rapper’s death and is currently being questioned by the police. – Sowetan.
