Beitbridge Border Post has become a nightmare for many Zimbabweans and travellers from countries north of the Zambezi River.
Congestion and delays have become a perennial phenomenon at the port of entry. On average, 4 000 people access the border everyday, but during the festive season the border carries more than four times its capacity.
The governments of Zimbabwe and South Africa have reaffirmed their commitments to establishing a One-Stop border post at Beitbridge. Zimbabwe’s trade with South Africa stands at 56 percent per annum.
Addressing journalists during Musina’s annual media conference at the weekend, Mayor Carol Phiri said they were aware of some of the concerns travellers were raising. She said there was a need to make use of their twinning agreement with Beitbridge in Zimbabwe to address some of the challenges.
The two municipalities signed a twinning agreement in 1996 to co-operate on areas around service delivery, economic development and corporate governance.
“We are happy that our municipality has been a provincial growth point in line with the Limpopo Spatial rationale,” said Ms Phiri.
