HIGHLANDERS are ready to defend their fortress when they welcome moneyed Scottland to Barbourfields Stadium on Sunday in a Chibuku Super Cup quarter-final rich in subplots. At the heart of it is a homecoming laced with tension, former Bosso captain Peter Muduhwa returns to Emagumeni wearing Scottland colours, aiming to help fellow stars Knowledge Musona and Khama Billiat end Highlanders’ cup hopes in front of their own fans.

This is more than a routine cup tie. It is a high stakes grudge match between two giants already locked in a fierce league rivalry. Their league meetings this season ended in a 1-1 draw at Barbourfields and a 2-1 win for Scottland in Harare. Now, the stakes are higher, win or go home in the country’s premier knockout competition.

Scottland arrive in Bulawayo determined to prove that their big money squad can deliver trophies. The Mabvuku side have spent heavily to assemble a team that reads like a national dream sheet, and a victory here would signal that their ambition stretches well beyond league honours. For Highlanders, a proud cup tradition and the sting of that league loss add extra fire. They know how to rise for cup occasions, and Sunday is a chance to reassert their standing in front of their faithful.

The buzz around Emagumeni is already palpable. Supporters began queueing for advance tickets midweek, and city talk has shifted almost entirely to this encounter. Cafes along Lobengula Street and kombis heading to Mzilikazi are awash with predictions, while local vendors are stocking Bosso and Scottland colours in anticipation of a carnival of noise.

“I will not say much, but it’s going to be a game and half. An exciting fixture and we hope for the best,” said Muduhwa, the former Bosso vice captain, who knows what it means to play in front of a full house at Barbourfields. His understated words hint at the pressure and pride that come with this fixture.

While the league race pauses, leaders Simba Bhora are in Botswana on Caf Confederation Cup duty, the Chibuku Super Cup takes centre stage. Simba Bhora, who made their top-flight debut in 2023 and were crowned champions in 2024, are chasing continental success after their home ground failed to meet Caf requirements. Their absence from domestic action only heightens focus on Barbourfields, where the noise and tension are expected to reach fever pitch. Scottland join three clubs, Highlanders, Dynamos and Triangle, that have previously lifted the trophy. Dynamos, the 2023 and 2024 winners, meet ZPC Kariba in another quarter-final. Manica Diamonds face Triangle at Sakubva on Saturday, while Bikita Minerals tackle MWOS at Gibbo on Sunday. Each of these ties carries its own intrigue, but all roads lead to Bulawayo for the marquee fixture.

Fans can watch the Bosso-Scottland showdown for a minimum of US$5, with VIP tickets at US$10 and VVIP at US$20. Kick-off is set for 3pm, and early signs point to a full house. For many, the afternoon will be about more than football. It is a gathering of history, ambition and passion, a showcase of the best of Zimbabwean club sport.

The Chibuku Super Cup remains the country’s most prestigious knockout title. For Scottland, who have lit up the league since their debut and now boast Musona and Billiat, a victory would strengthen their claim as Zimbabwe’s new powerhouse. For Highlanders, it is a chance for redemption and silverware in front of their faithful, and an opportunity to remind the league that Bulawayo remains a fortress.
