WHILE the spotlight has fallen on his teammates, especially those who play upfront, Simba Bhora defensive linkman Tichaona Chipunza’s exploits have largely gone unnoticed.
Simba Bhora are basking in glory after they were crowned 2024 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League champions in Kariba on Saturday.
And Simba Bhora skipper Walter Musona thinks Chipunza was the unsung hero of this historic campaign.
Musona, who is a hot favourite to win the Soccer Star of the Year award, actually feels Chipunza is one of the best defensive linkmen in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League.
“To be honest, Chipunza played really well this season. For me, he is one of the best defensive linkmen in this league,” Musona said.
“He was a consistent performer for the team but he was less celebrated,” Musona told Zimpapers Sports Hub soon after Simba Bhora’s coronation.
Simba Bhora are tipped to produce the bulk of players on this year’s Soccer Stars’ calendar.
Apart from Musona, the centre back trio of Isheanesu Mauchi, Blessing Moyo and Webster Tafa are also favourites.
It has emerged that Chipunza has slowly been winning the hearts of many for his gritty work in the middle of the park.
He played one of his best games when Simba Bhora beat CAPS United 2-1 at Wadzanai on Week 31.
