WARRIORS’ manager Sharrif Mussa has apologised to the Ndlovu family and the nation at large over the use of Adam’s number 13 jersey during the international friendly match against South Africa at Orlando Stadium on Tuesday.Zimbabwe won the match 2-1 through goals by Knowledge Musona and former Highlanders and Dynamos striker Cuthbert Malajila while the hosts got their face saver from the boot of stand-in captain Bernard Parker.
Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Khama Billiat wore the legendary striker’s number 13 jersey despite Zifa’s public statement last year that the jersey had been retired as an honour to the late predatory Warriors striker who died in a car accident on 16 December last year on his way to a friendly match in Victoria Falls. He was travelling with his younger brother Peter Ndlovu and a female passenger who also died on the spot.
Peter was critically injured but has since recovered.
“In my personal capacity I really want to convey my humble apologies to the Ndlovu family and indeed the nation at large. It was an embarrassing oversight on our part and I sincerely apologise over that and promise that in future we will definitely be on alert,” said Mussa.
On why exactly the jersey was released, Mussa professed ignorance saying he has been on leave for the past two months.
“On why and how the kit was released with the number 13 jersey I think Zifa or the coaches might be better placed to comment,” he said.
Ndlovu who was Chicken Inn head coach at the time of his death, scored 34 goals for the senior national team, the highest by a centre forward for the country.
