Mutare junior council elected

A fifteen-member Mutare City Junior Council was last week elected following a gruelling election process which saw the junior councillors being selected from 12 schools around the city.

Addressing the junior councillors, Mutare mayor Councillor Blessing Tandi said council was compelled to strengthen its relationship with junior council to effectively work together in dealing with social vices affecting youths.

“Our role as council is to become partners with the junior council in lobbying for awareness on child rights and abuses taking place in our communities,” he said. “The junior councillors are more aware of the vices affecting their peers and it is critical that we have their input for us to be able to map a way forward as one unit.”

Cllr Tandi said this was an opportunity for council to nurture the young leaders as they were already representatives of the people.

“We are also there to nurture these young leaders to become the leaders of tomorrow,” he said.

“Use them as a platform for fostering future development in terms of sustainable environmental strategies, lobbying for child rights and seeing to the eradication of the social vices that are affecting our youth today,” he said.

The executive committee made up of the junior mayor, his deputy, town clerk, treasurer, projects coordinator, chamber secretary and the public relations officer, is expected to be sworn into office at a date to be advised.
