MUTARE Polytechnic is set to introduce Diamond Cutting and Polishing course among other new programmes in a bid to broaden its curricular and imparting knowledge and skills in enterprise development courses.
In an interview on the sidelines of the college’ just-ended three-day symposium held from last Thursday, Mutare Poly information and publicity officer, Mrs Charity Mambondiyani, said the groundwork to introduce the new programmes had been done.
The symposium is the college’s annual event aimed at conscientising stakeholders and schoolchildren about programmes, activities and skills practiced and acquired at the college.
The event was attended by representatives from various Government ministries and schoolchildren among other stakeholders.
“All the paperwork was done. The initiative is in the pipeline. The groundwork to implement this and other programmes was done by the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development. We can confirm that we are set to introduce new programmes such as Diamond Cutting and Polishing training as well as Mass Communication departments among other programmes as we aim to make the college a leading tertiary institution in Africa.
“We were recently awarded and honoured at the Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce National Congress in Victoria Falls for our efforts for implementing programmes that make business and education work in unison. Our major objective is to device ways to generate income for the college, while at the same time imparting critical knowledge to students so that they become useful in the society,” she said.
The college’s principal, Mrs Poniso Watema, was recently awarded with the ZNCC 2014 principal of the year gong, while the college was first runner-up in the top institution of the year category.
“According to the ZNCC we were recognised for building private partnerships, linkages with business community and hotels as well as successfully intertwining business and education, for instance our income generating projects such as Padandaro Restaurant and guest houses. Our students are actively involved in the day-today business at some of these projects,” added Mrs Mambondiyani.
For the past years, Mutare Poly has managed to bag several accolades which include the best training institution of the year award in the Tourism and Hospitality Management sector at last year’s Megafest Tourism Awards, 2014 Best Training Institution category at Sanganani/Hlanganani World Tourism Expo as well as Best Exhibit in Adult Cookery and Best non-profit organisation stand.
