Three Mutare robbers who were masquerading as police detectives have been arrested leading to the recovery of a pistol with seven rounds, pepper spray and a pair of handcuffs.
The trio, Blessing Chireshe (34), Courage Musamba (24) and Dennis Muchero (24) have since appeared before the Mutare Magistrates’ Court facing one count of kidnapping and another count of robbery.
They were remanded in custody to October 22, 2024. Allegations are that on October 4, 2024, the suspects drove over an irrigation pipe that belongs to the complainant, Learnmore Prosper Chanaiwa (27) while driving in a green Toyota Corona on a dust road.
The complainant stopped them to inquire why they had run over his irrigation pipe. They stopped their vehicle and grabbed the complainant before forcing him into their car, handcuffed him and drove off with him.
The suspects only released him after he paid them US$20. The following day, the suspects who were armed with a pistol, pepper spray and a pair of handcuffs approached another complainant and introduced themselves as police detectives on duty.
Investigations revealed that the complainant asked the suspects to produce their police identity cards and one of them produced a pistol and robbed the complainant of US$1 050.
Police investigations led to the arrest of the accused persons and the recovery of the pistol with seven rounds, pepper spray, a pair of handcuffs and the motor vehicle which was used to commit the crime.
