A 49-year-old man who was masquerading as a police officer has been sentenced to 30 years in prison after being convicted of counts of rape.
The man, Paunonga Butau (49) appeared before the Karoi Magistrates’ Court this week.
The State proved that on June 11, 2024, the complainant aged 20, and her boyfriend were having a meal at a chicken outlet when Butau approached her and she refused to entertain him.
When the two left the place, Butau followed them before he introduced himself as a police detective who was conducting investigations on a baby dumping case.
He then took the complainant on the pretext that they were going to a police station but he took her to his house where he demanded to be intimate with her.
Butau raped her twice during the night and released her the following morning.
He ordered her not to disclose the matter to anyone but she reported the matter to the police leading to his arrest.
Meanwhile, a 44-year-old Karoi man appeared before the Karoi Magistrates’ Court facing charges of having sexual intercourse with a minor and another charge of indecent assault.
The man was sentenced to an effective five-years and six months in prison.
Sometime in June 2024, the man proposed love to the 13-year-old complainant and she accepted.
He then became intimate with her before he later took naked pictures of the complainant.
The matter came to light when his wife saw the pictures in his phone and showed the complainant’s mother, who made a police report.
