MUTARE’s sole super rugby franchise, Mutare Sports Club, has roped in frozen and dried foods distribution company, Mega Market as one of its benefactors. The timely development comes ahead of the 2016 National Rugby League that kicks off tomorrow (Saturday). MSC treasurer, Blessing Chizaza, said the unveiling ceremony of the Mega Market rugby kit will be tonight (Friday) at the club.“I am excited the Mega Market has agreed to come on board as an official sponsor this season. They will pay $1 000 towards the branding of our new kit as the official sponsor.
They will also buy billboard space on the field. The money will go a long way to cater for travel expenses and other overheads for hiring ambulances and referees for home matches. Mega Market has also agreed to provide our visiting teams with meals, so we are very excited about this season,” said Chizaza.
Last month, the Mutare outfit received its new blue kit as a donation from a group of former MSC players.
Mutare Sports Club coach, Mackenzie Munetsi, said the blue colour used to be the club’s second team colours in the 1990s.
“After failing to get the traditional black colours, we opted for blue which used to be our traditional colours. So this will be our jersey this year and will revert to black colours next year,” said Munetsi.
Meanwhile, MSC will tomorrow take on a tough Old Georgians in the season opener that will be played at the ZB Sports Club in Harare at 2.40pm.
Other matches to will be played at the same venue are HSC versus Police Defenders (1320hrs) and OJS versus OH (1610 hrs).
Munetsi said he had new signings who would add weight to the squad.
“We have new players that I am confident will prop up the team. Though OGS will be a tough side to open the league against, I am confident we will give them a good run for their money,” said Munetsi.
The Harare league comprises of the Mutare side, defending champions, Harare Sports Club, Old Hararians, Old Georgians, Old Johanians and Police Defenders, while the Southern top-flight league comprises of Bulawayo sides, Old Miltonians, Busters, Panthers and Bulldogs as well as Shabanie from Zvishavane, Gweru Sports Club and the Masvingo Titans.
